Houston Ballet Center wins design award

Our warmest congratulations to W S Bellows Construction Corporation, with whom Audience Systems collaborated on the Houston Ballet Center for Dance project. The Center has won two awards: the AIA Houston 2012 Design Award for Architecture greater than 50,000 square feet and the 2012 Landmark Award for Special Projects from the Houston Business Journal.

In a letter to Audience Systems, the board of Bellows wrote, “We are proud to have received these awards and know that it would not have been possible without Audience Systems’ involvement. We thank you for your good work and look forward to more opportunities in the future.”

Audience Systems provided a TX retractable platform system for the Center, which was designed by architects Gensler. Gensler designed the whole center as a “gallery-like” blank canvas whose neutral palette and understated lines would provide allow the dancers to be displayed as works of art.

The 200-seat retractable seating is located in the Margaret Alkek Williams Dance Laboratory and blends seamlessly with the interior; steelwork, system fascias and side panels are all finished in black. The system also features elegant LED aisle lighting. Operational benefits include a “partial opening” option which allows the center to deploy all or some of the seating as required, and side safety rails which are folded away rather than removed.

Spectators Want Better Seating!

Research just published by Arup reveals that a massive 49% of fans would like to see more comfortable, spacious seating at sports and entertainment venues.

Arup surveyed over 2,000 spectators in the UK as part of their “venues of the future” survey. Fans also named Wembley Stadium, The O2, Centre Court at Wimbledon and Lords Cricket Ground as the UK’s most iconic venues.

While outstanding comfort and sightlines provide the very best experience for fans, this must be balanced against the operational needs of the venue. We’ve summarised a few typical concerns below, along with some suggested solutions.

Maximising Capacity: “Rail mounted” chairs are an ideal solution here for both sports and entertainment venues. With chairs clamped to a continuous rail, chair spacing can be infinitely adjusted allowing the very maximum capacity to be achieved. Rail mounted chairs are also faster to install, and can be respaced should the needs of the venue change. And fewer legs mean faster cleaning .

Flexibility: Clearly retractable and removable seating are needed in many multipurpose entertainment venues, but how to integrate them without compromising on comfort? Audience Systems’ range includes the Espace 628 chair family, currently being manufactured for SMG’s Leeds Arena. This stylish chairs can be used in all areas of a venue – fixed, retractable and removable. Audience Systems’ latest retractable chair is Recital – which takes comfort one step further, offering all the features of a theatre chair on retractable platforms.

Consistency: Why should spectators squashed into stacking banqueting chairs on the arena floor pay the same as those on the comfortable seats up in the circle? The O2 Arena have used Audience Systems’ Matrix system to ensure that comfort is not compromised in the “stalls” area. Tip up seats are mounted in groups on removable floorbars, maintaining good access, legroom and seat comfort. Operational benefits include fast turnaround, no floor fixings (which some removable chairs require), durability, and provision of sturdy, non-snaking rows with consistent sightlines.

Alongside concerns about seating, Arup’s survey also reveals that fans’ other hopes for venues of the future. These include better use of technology, improved sound and acoustics, and better “crowd modelling” to enhance movement through the venue. And the most detrimental factor in major venues? Long toilet queues.

Recital Latest

We’re continuing to get a fantastic reaction to our new Recital chair, and we’re carrying on adding options. Newest options include writing tablets, timber under-seat panels, and a fully upholstered back.

Just launched in March 2012, the Recital is a revolution in seating – a high specification auditorium chair which will fit on a 280mm (11”) row rise retractable platform system (even with a writing tablet). We’ll be posting photographs of some installations soon, so watch this space.

Find out more about Recital at www.audiencesystems.com/recital.

Recital chair is launched

Fantastic to see many familiar faces at the launch of our Recital chair on 7th March at the Albert Hall. Recital is a full-blown auditorium chair for retractable platforms, and a good crowd of theatre consultants, architects and contractors turned out for a first glimpse. Thanks to all who offered us their company, as well as their comments.

We were delighted to receive so much positive feedback as the champagne flowed – along with some really constructive suggestions as to how we can continue to develop this exciting chair. We are confident in saying that this chair fills a real “gap in the market”.

It’s been a long-held ambition at Audience Systems to develop a chair of this type. But combining the comfort, style and features of an auditorium chair with the functionality of a retractable chair has proved to be a tough challenge. We’ve cleverly altered the fold down mechanism to help the chair ease into that small space between the retractable platforms. There’s also considerable cunning in the hinging action of the armrest and the concertina action of the end panels.

If you missed the event and you’d like to find out more, please email us on sales@audiencesystems.com or call +44 (0)1373 865050. We’ll be delighted to visit you to demonstrate the chair first hand. You can see more information about Recital at www.audiencesystems.com/recital

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO US!

Audience Systems is celebrating its 40th birthday! On Tuesday 21st February, the anniversary of our incorporation in 1972, we all gathered in the factory to raise a glass to our longevity and success.

Toasting Audience Systems' Success

A fabulous cake in the shape of a seating system – who would have thought it – was created by the ingenious Hilary Henley specially for the occasion. We also enjoyed reminiscing over some old photos – not all for public consumption! – and stories of our favourite times at Audience Systems.

The company started life in a garage in Middlesex, and moved to Wiltshire in 1973 – taking advantage of the government’s Rural Investment scheme. We moved to our current site in the 1980s and have continued to expand both our buildings and our headcount ever since.

It was not until the 1990s that we became part of the Kotobuki Group of companies, and their design expertise contributed to our ongoing success, with products such as the Espace 628 becoming market leaders.

Today we are proud of our reputation for innovation, which continues with the introduction of new products like Recital – a groundbreaking auditorium chair for retractable seating systems, and the iconic Blaze stadium chair. We employ over 100 people at our Westbury Headquarters, and in offices in Singapore and the USA.

The Colour of Magic

Audience Systems fixed and retractable seatingAudience Systems’ stunning seating installation at the BBC Arena in Switzerland really illustrates the visual impact that a mixture of seat colours can create in a venue.  There are some great photos in the case study which can be viewed by clicking here.

The seats at the BBC Arena represent both the colours of the resident handball team Kadetten Schaffhausen (yellow and orange) and of the local region (blue and black). While appearing random, the colour scheme has been cleverly defined to create a seamless blend from one pair of colours to the other. It also smooths the transition from areas of fixed chairs to areas of retractable seating. Rather like an impressionist painting, the effect only really comes to life when the viewer stands back.

It’s by no means the first time Audience Systems have created an unusual medley of seat colours in a venue. The effect is popular in venues where events are televised –empty seats are disguised as the camera and viewer are fooled by the onslaught of colour!  But it’s also a way for designers to create impact, and for a cheerful, vibrant effect to be created.

It’s tricky of course – creating hours of work in creating seating layouts and a few headaches during seat installation! But the finished effect is a venue that truly stands out from the crowd.

A New Era in Retractable Seating

Not much longer now until the launch of our Recital chair which is set to revolutionise retractable seating. We’re keeping the chair firmly under wraps until its official launch on 7th March, but you get a sneak preview by looking at a concept sketch here.

The beauty of the Recital chair? Well, we call it “retractable seating with no compromise”. It throws out of the window many of the concessions which have had to be made in chair design when the chair is on a retractable platform. When a platform chair’s folded down, clearly there are maximum dimensions between the decks and the front and rear beams of the platforms. So generally, the more luxurious the chair, the higher the row rise. But many chair designs simply cannot be accommodated on a retractable system.

Recital however breaks new ground by offering classic auditorium style and features, including a contoured show wood back and timber end panels – all on a retractable system. You can find out more about how we did it by clicking here.

Local Fundraising

We were all delighted to find out more about Fairfield Farm College – a local charity which Audience Systems have been raising money for. Jemma Gunning and Katie Osborne from Audience Systems visited to present a cheque for £400 and were given a tour.

The college is based in Dilton Marsh, a couple of miles from Audience Systems’ headquarters in Westbury, UK. It offers day and residential courses to young people with learning difficulties, with the aim of developing practical life skills. These include caring for the farm animals, learning about motor vehicles in the garage, preparing lunches in the kitchen, and working on the computers.

On site are a newly built farm shop and café which are open to the public, and staffed by students. Students also make products to be sold in the shop such as bird feeders.
Audience Systems’ donation was raised by the staff through fundraising activities including a  tasty cake stand, raffle, quiz and “guess the cakes” scratchcards, together with a contribution from the company. The money raised will buy the students a TV for the recently extended common room area.

We wish the dedicated team at the college the very best and hope the students enjoy the TV!

Question Time

Audience Systems’ MD Mark Cowley questioned Business Secretary Vince Cable at the 2011 Institute of Directors annual dinner, which Audience Systems attended along with a small group of clients and partners.

Mark asked Mr Cable what the government intended to do to help British manufacturing businesses such as Audience Systems protect themselves from foreign imports. The Minister’s answer: that manufacturers who import components cannot really complain about foreign competition. A predictably evasive answer perhaps!

Political matters aside, the event was well-run and thoroughly enjoyable. John Sergeant’s speech was eloquent and entertaining, and Eden Project Founder Tim Smit was amusingly controversial. Audience Systems would like to thank everyone who joined us and made the evening a success.

Looking Good at CityDance

Great to see the photographs from Studio 405 at the CityDance Center at Strathmore, Washington DC. We love the finish the client selected for the Espace 628 chairs and the telescopic system with co-ordinating solid timber armrests, seat panels, back panels and fascia boards, all in maple.

It’s a really contemporary finish that creates the light and airy feel the client was looking for. The space is used by multiple organisations, as well as CityDance themselves, so fast and easy turnarounds were also a key consideration.

Director of Operations, Letitia Hays tells us she is very happy with the finished result. “The Audience Systems seating is so easy to use; I can set the telescopic system up on my own.”
